Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling), and ensuring safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Maintenance of safe, clean environment and proper handling of blood spills

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF, etc.)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation accurately and timely
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures and provide interventions as needed
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per facility policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
