Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-treatment evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Competence in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160), and monitoring intradialytic problems
  • Accurate documentation skills for Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, vital signs, and treatment parameters
  • Ability to observe patients, report changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor, and perform interventions as prescribed
  • Capability to assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Training assistance for direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain reinfusion vital signs, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document all treatment information, progress notes, interventions, and patient responses; report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens; clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements for quality goals
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
