Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and monitoring parameters like OLC, AMP, UKM
  • Capability to perform vital signs measurement, weight assessment, pre/post dialysis evaluations, and hemostasis
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including QB, QD, UF programming, and safety alarms
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Perform reinfusion functions, obtain vital signs, evaluate patient prior to discharge, and apply dressings
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document patient treatment information, interventions, and responses; report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues, and document/report findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills with disinfectant per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
