Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to perform setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Ability to ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to monitor patients, evaluate vascular access, obtain vital signs/weights, initiate/discontinue treatments, and document accurately
Ability to clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Ability to assist in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes with initial identification
Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
Clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
Maintain safe/clean working environment
Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for quality goals
