Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and document accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and laboratory specimen preparation
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes/unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (QB, QD), monitor response, and intervene for intradialytic problems
Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations, weight, vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
Document all treatment information, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes, and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, perform/document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene, document, and report findings
Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
