Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM)
  • Ability to perform vital signs measurement, weights, pre/post dialysis evaluations, hemostasis, dressings, and blood pressure checks (standing & sitting)
  • Proficiency in documenting on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and patient treatment information
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Skills in machine safety checks, laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per orders, including programming machines for UF goal, time, modeling, and enabling safety alarms
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, perform reinfusion functions
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations accurately and timely
  • Document all patient treatment information, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, intervene as needed
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Actively participate in QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
