Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-treatment evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Competence in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and monitoring intradialytic problems
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
  • Ability to clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Support for patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access patency
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic issues as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Document all treatment-related information accurately and timely, including interventions and patient responses
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures)
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, and clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
