Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling), and ensuring safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Proficient in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access cannulation/heparin administration
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF, etc.)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all parameters
Perform machine safety checks, report changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming, ensure safety alarms enabled
Record accurate treatment information, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
Obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Evaluate patients pre-discharge, monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
