Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post treatment evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Knowledge of intradialytic interventions, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and UF modeling
  • Accurate documentation skills (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Ability to monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in training of direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment and report unusual findings
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies efficiently and monitor self-care patients
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
