Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Proficient in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup procedures
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes to RN/supervisor

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access cannulation/heparin administration
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all parameters
Perform pre/post dialysis evaluations, record vital signs, and ensure hemostasis/dressings before discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Document treatment information accurately and timely, including on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and document interventions
Obtain laboratory specimens and prepare for collection
Clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements for patient satisfaction and goals
Maintain safe and clean working environment, including setup/operation of hemodialysis machines
