Ability to function under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM)) and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD))
Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform functions for treatment discontinuation
Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting blood pressure), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
Document patient treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant information or changes in patient condition to registered nurse or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes or unusual findings
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (e.g., arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, and report findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
