Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, and patient information
Observation and intervention skills for patient and machine safety checks
Ability to collect laboratory specimens and handle blood spills with disinfectants
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and reinfusion
Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed, and monitor patient response
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document patient treatment information, including progress notes if applicable
Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Perform machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and evaluate vascular access during treatment
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
Maintain safe and clean working environment and assist in its upkeep
