Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in machine programming, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160), and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to observe patients, intervene for intradialytic problems, evaluate hemostasis, apply dressings, and monitor self-care under RN supervision
  • Competence in laboratory testing preparation, spill cleanup, supply management, and maintaining a safe/clean environment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment info, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
  • Report significant changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests, prepare specimens, clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently, monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for patient quality goals
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, setup/operate hemodialysis machines
