Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Ability to maintain safe and clean working environment and conduct machine safety checks

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
  • Monitor patient response to therapy, obtain vital signs before reinfusion, and perform treatment discontinuation functions
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information, including pre/post evaluations, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, and document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Support QEP, CQI, process improvements, and patient satisfaction goals
