Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in performing vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, initiating/discontinuing dialysis, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, dressings, and blood pressure measurements
  • Ability to document accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, manage supplies/equipment, and support patient self-care under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and staff training

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately with initial identification
  • Document treatment info completely, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI and patient satisfaction goals
