Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including vital signs monitoring, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and intradialytic interventions
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and patient-specific programming
Capability to perform patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and handle blood spills with disinfectants
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including QB, QD, UF goals, and safety alarms
Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, monitor patient response, and document all actions
Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and modeling
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately and timely with initial identification
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, and report findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities for patient satisfaction and quality goals
