Requirements

Work under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Comply with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporate, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of adequacy measures including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Eligibility (delegated or allowed by state law) to perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration
Ability to calculate and program dialysis machines for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Knowledge of safety alarms including Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160
Knowledge of Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities

Responsibilities

Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
Support organizational commitment to QEP and CQI activities, including patient satisfaction, and participate in process improvement
Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since last treatment
Evaluate vascular access for patency pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems and intervene as prescribed or directed
Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform functions for treatment discontinuation
Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient (standing and sitting blood pressure) prior to venous access termination
Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
Enter patient-specific dialysis programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
Record accurate and timely vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Complete accurate documentation of treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes if applicable
Report significant information or changes in patient condition to registered nurse or supervisor
Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks per facility policy; report changes or unusual findings
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial and venous pressures), intervene as needed, document, and report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection
Clean all blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant per facility policy
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate procedures
