  • No dialysis experience required (extensive on-the-job training provided)
  • Ability to function under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment per procedures, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and perform/record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Record accurate/timely vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes with initial identification
  • Report significant information/changes in patient condition to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Observe patient, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status, and report changes/unusual findings
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions, and document/report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
