Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Knowledge of machine safety checks, hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goals, etc.)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all parameters
Perform pre/post dialysis evaluations, record vital signs, and ensure hemostasis/dressings
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Document treatments accurately and timely, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks and patient observations
Obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
