Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of patient education topics including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency and perform cannulation
  • Skills in obtaining pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and blood pressure (standing & sitting)
  • Competence in administering Heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, Sodium (Na) modeling, and UF modeling
  • Proficiency in machine programming, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160), and alarm testing (e.g., Pressure Hold)
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing preparation and specimen collection
  • Skills in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about well-being, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and evaluations
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer Heparin as allowed
  • Initiate dialysis per prescribed orders and monitor patient response/intradialytic problems
  • Discontinue treatment, ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, Na/UF modeling)
  • Enable safety alarms, record vital signs/treatment parameters, and document all interventions
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to PCT III or nurse supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and monitor vascular access during treatment
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Maintain clean and safe environment: clean/disinfect machines, chairs, equipment, and areas between treatments
  • Perform pretreatment machine preparation and alarm testing, documenting as appropriate
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for patient quality goals
