Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in monitoring patient responses, vital signs, and intradialytic problems
Capability to calculate and program dialysis machine parameters (e.g., Ultrafiltration goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and ensure safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Competence in laboratory testing preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, reinfusion)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely with initial identification
Document patient treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Perform machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and document interventions
Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Support QEP and CQI activities for patient satisfaction and quality goals
