Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including vital signs monitoring, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, UF modeling, and safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to perform patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician orders
Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including QB, QD, UF goals, and safety alarms
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document all actions
Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes accurately
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and document interventions
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
