Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Skills in performing vital signs, weights, intradialytic monitoring, interventions, machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling), safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Observation and reporting of patient conditions/changes to RN/supervisor
  • Maintenance of safe and clean working environment, machine safety checks
  • Preparation of lab specimens and handling blood spills

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, reinfusion)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations accurately and timely
  • Document all treatment information, interventions, patient responses, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues
  • Obtain lab testing, prepare specimens, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform standing/sitting BP
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for quality goals
