Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160) and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills for vital signs, treatment parameters, Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and interventions
  • Ability to report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Competence in laboratory testing specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management, and hemostasis/dressing application
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, patient satisfaction, and staff recruitment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document all treatment-related information, interventions, and patient responses
  • Report significant information, changes, or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access, and document/report issues
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor and assist patients with self-care under RN supervision
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
  • Participate in staff recruitment process
