Requirements

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure, with state-specific permissions for dialysis procedures excluding Intensive Care Units
  • Documented competency and proficiency in setting up and priming equipment for renal replacement therapies (hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis)
  • Ability to perform under direct supervision of Hemodialysis Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Knowledge of FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and compliance with state and federal regulations

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care under direct supervision of Hemodialysis RN for assigned patients in acute settings
  • Perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures, including administering and monitoring treatments per current treatment plan
  • Report and document all new/unusual incidences, information, complaints, problems, changes in patient condition, or equipment issues to the RN
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, obtain pre/post treatment vital signs and weight, perform cannulation as permitted by state, and report difficulties
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in patient records, hospital EMS, and ACES, including vital signs and treatment parameters
  • Set up and prime equipment as directed by RN, initiate treatments including blood flow rate (QB) and dialysate flow rate (QD)
  • Collect, label, and deliver laboratory specimens per facility policy
  • Identify intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed or directed, and document patient response
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, discontinue treatments, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Perform pre/post dialysis evaluations, weights, vital signs, and initial identifications; report to RN
  • Ensure safety alarms are used for every treatment and maintain a safe/clean environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI), and process improvements
  • Initiate basic CPR and respond to dialysis-related emergencies
  • Reinforce patient education
