Requirements

  • Able to work PRN/as needed hours
  • Theological and clinical training to help patients, families, and staff cope with illness, trauma, death, and loss
  • Ability to assess patient's spiritual practices/values and integrate them into the medical plan of care
  • Proficient in visual abilities to perform essential job functions satisfactorily
  • Serve as liaison to Catholic Chaplains, community clergy, and facilitate Sacramental Roman Catholic Ministry

Responsibilities

  • Minister to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, residents, and staff
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team, communicating spiritual assessment results
  • Work with patients/families to understand medical treatment implications in the context of their spiritual beliefs and support the team
  • Consult and debrief with Avera departments, groups, and staff during unexpected or unsettling events
  • Plan, facilitate, coordinate, and deliver pastoral and spiritual care to patients, families, and staff via consultations, referrals, requests, or rounding
  • Explore patient and family beliefs and meaning in illness and crisis, respecting their goals and choices
  • Gather and evaluate data on patient's bio-psycho-social-spiritual/religious health; perform assessments and reassessments to assist in plan of care development
  • Assist patients, families, and staff in crises, bereavement, and end-of-life decisions, addressing distress
  • Provide encouragement and support during illness, empowering use of spiritual/religious strengths
  • Lead spirituality groups, ecumenical devotional services, family conferences, public prayers, dedications, and remembrance services
  • Document relevant spiritual/psycho-social information in electronic records, adhering to confidentiality and regulatory guidelines
