Requirements

  • Ability to model effective pedagogical skills in teaching oral English, numeracy, and beginning literacy to preliterate refugee women
  • Experience or familiarity with ESL Literacy curriculum and teaching methods
  • Proficiency in utilizing Zoom, including multiple breakout rooms, for instruction
  • Capability to work in a hybrid model: from home on instruction days, in-office as needed for other duties
  • Availability for 32 hours per week, specifically Tue, Wed, Thu 8:30-2:00pm
  • Comfortable with limited-term position (Dec 1, 2025 - Jul 31, 2026), subject to funding

Responsibilities

  • Model effective pedagogical skills in teaching oral English, numeracy, and beginning literacy
  • Utilize existing ESL Literacy curriculum and teaching methods in client instruction
  • Collaborate with other teaching staff to adapt curriculum as needed
  • Create an encouraging and supportive environment that fosters learning using trauma-informed teaching practices
  • Prepare teaching/learning materials such as realia, handouts, and WhatsApp videos
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client and program records, including attendance, goals tracking, and client case files, on Teams and Dynamics database
  • Assess clients’ literacy and CASAS levels at defined intervals and track scoring
  • Train clients and volunteers on basic phone and laptop functionality as needed
  • Oversee and direct volunteers during class time, debriefs, material drop-offs, and follow-up communications (e.g., sending weekly lesson plans and materials to Teaching Assistants)
  • Provide training for volunteers, such as in-class coaching
  • Co-teach alongside the current ESL Specialist Instructor and partner with caseworkers for holistic program addressing language and cultural integration
  • Support and give direction to volunteers serving as in-class teaching assistants, test proctors, and/or material drop-off assistants
  • Assist with client recruitment, enrollment, assessment, record keeping, and reporting
