Requirements

Candidates should possess 7+ years of strategic and executive-level technical and operational leadership experience, along with deep expertise in building high-traffic consumer platform products on desktop and mobile, including consumption methods, user experiences, technologies, and platforms. They should have proven experience across both product and engineering functions, with capabilities to lead program management, design, research, analytics, and other related areas. Furthermore, candidates are expected to demonstrate strong managerial skills and experience from both Wikimedia and other organizations, ensuring the continuous sharing of knowledge and skills, and the ability to manage a large department with a significant operating budget and hundreds of globally dispersed staff. A proven track record in recruiting, building, retaining, and mentoring high-performing, diverse, global leadership teams is also required, along with managerial maturity that empowers leaders to exercise their judgment and discretion.

Responsibilities

The Deputy Chief Product and Technology Officer will support multi-year strategy and planning efforts, setting and executing compelling annual and multi-year plans that align investments and resources with global trends and organizational objectives, while communicating clearly with the Board of Trustees and key constituents. They will shape and define cross-functional teams, evaluate product performance, identify risks and opportunities, prioritize high-value products, and optimize resource allocation. Additionally, the role involves leveraging expertise and insight to find solutions to complex problems, leading a high-performance culture that values inclusion, managing people and teams in line with organizational values, assuming a hands-on creative leadership role, driving towards solutions with clear decision-making and accountability, and demonstrating the ability to recruit, cultivate, and retain talent. The Deputy CPTO will also support the organization’s current and future risk profile across areas including policy, government regulation, technology, and security, and build trusted relationships throughout the global Wikimedia community to grow volunteer engagement and readership.
