Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to monitor patients, evaluate responses, perform vital signs, weights, and interventions per physician orders
  • Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, vital signs, and parameters
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Maintenance of safe, clean working environment and machine safety checks

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions, monitor patient responses
  • Perform reinfusion functions, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets/progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, intervene for unusual patient status, and document responses
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Support maintenance of safe, clean working environment
