Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to monitor patients, evaluate responses, perform vital signs, weights, and interventions per physician orders
Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, vital signs, and parameters
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Maintenance of safe, clean working environment and machine safety checks

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions, monitor patient responses
Perform reinfusion functions, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets/progress notes
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, intervene for unusual patient status, and document responses
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access issues
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills per policy
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Support maintenance of safe, clean working environment
