Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
  • Considerable knowledge of direct patient care in multiple renal replacement modalities, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and apheresis
  • Ability to assess patients’ responses to treatment and make appropriate adjustments/modifications under physician direction
  • Proficiency in operating dialysis/apheresis equipment, performing machine safety tests, alarm testing, calibration, dialysate testing, functional testing, and disinfection
  • Skills in documentation using systems like ACES and hospital records
  • Ability to supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians, clerical staff, and provide education to ICU staff for CRRT
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with physicians, healthcare team, hospital staff, and FMS facility nursing staff
  • Capability to apply high-level thinking for shift patient scheduling, prioritizing critical patients
  • Knowledge of intradialytic transfusions, adverse reaction notification, and blood supplier protocols
  • Participation in QAI activities, staff meetings, training, orientation, and adverse event reporting

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in inpatient renal replacement and apheresis services across modalities like hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, CRRT, and apheresis
  • Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; direct and educate ICU staff on CRRT
  • Assess patients’ responses to therapy, adjust treatment plans as indicated by credentialed physicians, and communicate issues to Inpatient Program Manager, physicians, hospital nurses, etc
  • Deliver safe, effective, timely, and efficient care; provide organized shift reports and adjust patient schedules for critical needs
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document intradialytic transfusions, notifying of adverse reactions
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans
  • Initiate communication with FMS facility nursing staff and hospital personnel as needed
  • Accurately document all treatment information in patient records (ACES and hospital)
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and areas between treatments
  • Prepare for dialysis treatments, perform pre-treatment machine alarm testing, and initiate Solution Delivery System if applicable
  • Operate equipment safely, troubleshoot minor issues, utilize supplies efficiently
  • Conduct and document dialysis/apheresis machine safety tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, and disinfection per policies
  • Participate in QAI activities, staff meetings, training, and orientation
  • Act as subject matter expert for hospital staff on dialysis-related patient/equipment complications
  • Report new/unusual incidents, complaints, or problems per Adverse Event Report requirements
