Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry degree and current state optometry license (implied by scope of practice and state board adherence)
  • Knowledge of evidence-based care guidelines for vision care, including medications, treatments (e.g., red eye, LASIK, cataract surgery), and diagnostic tests (e.g., glaucoma testing, OCT)
  • Ability to perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity, refraction, keratometry, and use of instruments/pharmaceutical agents
  • Skills in prescribing, fitting, and adjusting eyeglasses, contact lenses, and vision aids
  • Experience in patient education on eye health, contact lens care, disease management, and safety
  • Proficiency in maintaining patient records in systems (e.g., BOSS) accurately and confidentially
  • Adherence to state, local, federal healthcare regulations, and Walmart vision center guidelines
  • Strong customer service, communication, and collaboration skills with patients, staff, pharmacists, store management, and external healthcare professionals
  • Leadership abilities in analyzing business objectives, developing strategies, managing resources, evaluating processes, and fostering team development/ethics

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based vision care, including recommending/prescribing medications/treatments, routine vision care, and patient education on eye health
  • Perform comprehensive eye exams, evaluate health conditions, diagnose vision defects, and develop treatment plans
  • Prescribe, fit, adjust eyeglasses/contact lenses, order/interpret diagnostic tests, and provide additional treatments (e.g., foreign body removal)
  • Recommend follow-ups, referrals to ophthalmologists/other professionals, and coordinate care plans
  • Follow up on diagnostics/tests and communicate with health professionals
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, represent the company in patient interactions, and assist vision center staff (e.g., opticians)
  • Maintain/update patient information, perform administrative/retail tasks (e.g., financial transactions, registration)
  • Ensure coordinated patient care with internal/external stakeholders
  • Analyze business objectives, develop/implement strategies, manage costs/forecasts, evaluate operations, and promote continuous improvement
  • Recruit, develop talent, support mentorship/succession planning, and cultivate an ethical work environment
