Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED
  • Sufficient knowledge and skill to perform the duties listed, with thorough knowledge of line construction and maintenance activities gained through experience such as Transmission Line Mechanic A (typically 5 years of construction, maintenance, and operation of transmission lines)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities preferred
  • Physical demands: Exposure to environmental conditions such as weather, hazardous conditions, and uneven terrain; working at heights and climbing structures; ability to operate vehicles, heavy equipment, and mechanized devices; occasional lift up to 100 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Physical abilities assessment required
  • Good working knowledge of transmission line safety rules and practices, proficient in application of resuscitation and first aid
  • Good working knowledge of transmission circuitry
  • Possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license
  • Meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law
  • Good working knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used
  • Good working knowledge of the Company's transmission and distribution standards
  • Ability to deal with employees, customers, and the general public in a courteous and proper manner
  • Residency within 30 minutes of the Gilmer Service Center
  • Considerable travel and overtime may be required

Responsibilities

  • Supervise field line work by transmission line crew in construction, maintenance, and operation of transmission lines and stations
  • Plan and schedule work, assuring safe and efficient flow of activities, including requesting system clearances and outages
  • Lead crews in a manner supportive of and consistent with cultural pillars and AEP Leadership framework
  • Assure all work performed in accordance with Company safety rules and practices
  • Supervise line crews in construction, maintenance, and operation of transmission lines, assuring safe work rules and practices are followed
  • Assure proper and safe use of tools and equipment, and safety, welfare, and training of personnel assigned
  • Procure materials, tools, and equipment as required
  • Comply with practices, policies, and standards of the Company that apply to transmission line work
  • Maintain good relations with employees and safety to the public regarding Company facilities and operations
  • Understand and apply provisions of Management Information and Policy Manual, labor contracts, employee handbook, and applicable supplements
  • Attend supervisory, site visit, and work scheduling meetings as required
  • Maintain contacts between assigned functions and other parts of the Company
  • Keep immediate supervisor advised on activities and make/maintain records and reports as required
  • Perform duties of a Transmission Line Mechanic-A as required
  • Make effective recommendations for employment, promotion, discipline, and discharge of personnel assigned
