Experience in data engineering, particularly building and standardizing data platforms
Ability to design data pipelines that ingest, validate, and transform data (e.g., accounting data) into clean, reliable datasets
Skills in defining schemas and data contracts balancing flexibility with correctness
Expertise in building validation, lineage tracking, and drift detection into pipelines
Capability to create discoverable, computable, and observable data interfaces
Knowledge of modeling domains, translating concepts (e.g., accounting) into ontologies with entities, relationships, and rules
Experience creating abstractions for AI systems to reason about real-world constraints
Proficiency in designing for clarity through schema, code, and documentation
Ability to own architectural vision and maintain consistency over time
Skills in running effective design reviews to challenge assumptions and drive alignment
Mentoring experience for engineers on systems thinking (e.g., load testing, schema design, observability)
Strong focus on simplification, removing accidental complexity, and enforcing clean abstractions
Ability to own projects end-to-end from scoping to delivery, including planning, execution, and quality
Willingness to work in-person in NYC (Flatiron office)

Responsibilities

Build and standardize the data platform
Design data pipelines that ingest, validate, and transform accounting data into clean, reliable datasets
Define schemas and data contracts that balance flexibility with correctness
Build validation, lineage tracking, and drift detection into every pipeline
Create interfaces that make data discoverable, computable, and observable throughout the system
Model the domain as a system by translating accounting concepts into well-structured ontologies: entities, relationships, and rules
Create abstractions that help AI systems reason safely about real-world constraints
Design for clarity: make complex workflows understandable through schema, code, and documentation
Own the architectural vision for your area and keep it consistent over time
Run effective design reviews that challenge assumptions and drive alignment
Mentor engineers on how to think about systems: from load testing to schema design to observability patterns
Simplify aggressively—removing accidental complexity and enforcing clean, stable abstractions
Own projects completely from scoping to delivery as the Responsible Party (RP) for the systems you design
Plan your own projects, work closely with your pod, and take full responsibility for execution and quality
Build systems that serve every part of Basis: AI, product, and internal agents, making them fast, reliable, and easy to understand
