Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for their Cloud Compute team. This fully remote team in Spain manages all of Affirm's Kubernetes clusters, providing a reliable and available cloud environment for all engineering teams. The role involves driving initiatives to enhance observability, fortify infrastructure reliability, and automate operational workflows, with a significant impact on the stability and efficiency of the engineering organization.

Requirements

  • Extensive track record of developing and deploying highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS and Kubernetes.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills for cloud and distributed systems.
  • Extensive experience automating deployments using Kubernetes.
  • Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
  • Ability to write high-quality, easily understood code.
  • Thrives in ambiguity, comfortable analyzing systems from low-level idioms to high-level architecture.
  • Proven ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration.
  • Must be willing to participate in an on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and lead business-impacting projects.
  • Collaborate across teams (product management, design & analytics) to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks/trade-offs.
  • Act as a force-multiplier for the team by defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes.
  • Own team operations and availability by ensuring proper monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting for "keep the lights on" and on-call efforts.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting and advocating for code review and design standards.
  • Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
