Requirements

Candidates must have 6+ years of experience in applied ML roles, with at least 1 year focused on ranking, relevance, search, or recommender systems. Fluency in Python and experience with ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, or CatBoost are essential. Proven experience in taking ML models from research to production at scale, and comfort with designing and running A/B experiments, including selecting appropriate offline and online metrics, are required. A combination of product intuition and technical depth is also necessary.

Responsibilities

The Staff Machine Learning Engineer will lead the development of Headway’s ranking and relevance models, designing and building systems for patient-provider matching using search, recommendation, and personalization. This role involves setting technical direction, building the initial stack, and mentoring future ML teammates. Responsibilities include designing and scaling ML models for patient discovery and connection, improving matching accuracy through personalization using patient signals, provider attributes, and outcomes data, and establishing ML infrastructure for experimentation, training, deployment, and monitoring. The engineer will also provide technical leadership, guide junior team members, and partner with product, engineering, and data science teams to define metrics, design A/B experiments, and influence product strategy.
