Requirements
- Significant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
- Workers' Compensation experience preferred
- Academic credentials, strong analytical skills, and legal acumen for successful litigation work
- Requisite trial advocacy skills to handle matters independently as lead counsel or as part of a team
- Ability to maintain a highly productive case volume with efficiency, proactive case management, work ethic, and high-quality work product
- Minimal need for managerial oversight and guidance
- Adept at utilizing technology and collaborating with support staff (e.g., 1:1 attorney/paralegal ratio)
- Awareness of changes to the law, technology, local rules, procedural requirements, and legal/insurance industry impacts
- Subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills for Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) concentrations, with ability to develop new ones as needed
- Ability to provide factually, legally, and analytically sound case valuations, promptly updated and communicated
- Ability to establish and maintain strong professional relationships with key associates, claims partners, and industry colleagues
- Availability to report to Newport Beach (hybrid or remote depending on location), primarily covering Boards in Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate trial advocacy skills independently as lead counsel or as part of a team, handling all matters per NTD standard methodology, claims, and client expectations
- Utilize technology and collaborate with support staff for efficient case management
- Stay aware of changes in law, technology, local rules, and industry aspects impacting litigation strategies
- Perform with subject matter expertise in NTD concentrations and develop additional ones as required
- Provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations, updating and communicating them timely to clients and claims
- Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with Office of the Chief Legal Officer associates, senior director-level claims partners, and industry colleagues
- Utilize relationships to build NTD’s reputation and expand case referral opportunities
- Represent clients under commercial and personal lines insurance policies, managing a mix of cases varying in complexity, severity, product lines, and concentrations across courts and agencies in assigned jurisdictions
