Zapier is seeking a Sr. Applied AI Engineer to join the Data AI/ML team. This role is central to integrating AI into Zapier's products, focusing on building reusable AI components like LLM-powered APIs, vector search services, orchestration libraries, and evaluation tooling. The engineer will shape AI implementation at Zapier, collaborating with various teams to ensure AI capabilities are scalable, reliable, and user-friendly. Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience building distributed, scalable cloud-based web applications.
  • Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a drive for outstanding customer experiences.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) for complex production tasks.
  • Experience experimenting with agent architectures to build user-facing features.
  • Familiarity with underlying LLM technologies such as transformer networks and attention mechanisms.
  • Experience deploying evaluation frameworks for LLMs, including performance, reliability, and bias assessment.
  • Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, including optimizing knowledge retrieval and understanding indexing/chunking strategies.
  • Experience with semantic search and vector databases, and their differences from traditional retrieval methods.
  • Experience with the full lifecycle of building, testing, deploying, and scaling LLM architectures.
  • Ability to identify and document trade-offs made during development.
  • Experience building with cloud infrastructure technologies.
  • A passion for shipping to customers and understanding their needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build reusable building blocks for AI agent experiences, including LLM-powered APIs, vector search services, orchestration libraries, and evaluation tooling.
  • Collaborate with AI Engineers, Product teams, and Machine Learning Engineers to ensure AI capabilities are scalable, reliable, and easy to use.
  • Shape how AI is implemented at Zapier, from data and infrastructure to user-facing product experiences.
  • Translate customer needs into functional, production-ready features.
