Backend Engineer
SleeperFull Time
Mid-level (3 to 4 years)
Candidates should have at least 5 years of backend engineering experience with significant TypeScript and Node.js production work, and prior experience working on developer tools is a plus. Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) is required, along with familiarity with observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) and performance tuning. Direct experience designing and operating large file upload/download pipelines at scale, deep practical CDN integration and optimization knowledge, and production-grade PostgreSQL usage, including tuning and troubleshooting are essential. A track record of debugging incidents across distributed systems and comfort working across the stack, including backend application development and infrastructure work, are necessary. Experience with image and video processing tools, formats, and codecs, as well as the frontend ecosystem, is a plus. An ownership mentality and empathy towards developer experience are also key requirements.
Engineers will work across the entire stack, including client libraries, CLI, CDN, the storage server, and deployment infrastructure, focusing on improving upload resilience, optimizing protocols, and accelerating upload processing. Responsibilities include contributing to open-source servers and upstream dependencies, improving analytics bucket offerings, optimizing assets for faster delivery, and building out the edge network for faster uploads and features like automatic cache invalidation. They will also improve the performance, observability, and reliability of the storage server, work with the frontend team to build a storage explorer, enhance APIs, client libraries, and CLIs for better developer experience, and resolve escalated support issues while identifying and resolving systemic platform issues.
Open-source backend service for developers
Supabase provides an open-source backend as a service (BaaS) platform that helps developers and businesses create scalable applications more easily. It offers real-time databases, authentication, and storage solutions, all designed to integrate smoothly into existing workflows. This means developers can focus on building their applications without needing to spend a lot of time on backend development. Supabase operates on a freemium model, where users can access basic services for free, while advanced features are available through paid subscriptions. This approach allows it to cater to various user needs. What sets Supabase apart from its competitors is its open-source nature, which allows users to customize the platform and benefit from community-driven enhancements. The company aims to provide a reliable and efficient solution for developers, ensuring high uptime for applications that are critical to their users.
