About the Role

As a Staff Engineer at Kin, you will be instrumental in developing the products and features that drive our operations. We utilize a Ruby on Rails backend, a Typescript frontend, and a PostgreSQL database, adhering to Agile methodologies in our product and software development. This role offers the opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges, collaborate with peers across Development, Product, QA, and other cross-functional teams, and mentor junior engineers. You will also have opportunities to lead small teams.

A Day in the Life May Include:

  • Writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code in Ruby on Rails, with occasional work in Python and Typescript.
  • Setting high standards for the Engineering team through example.
  • Leading pair programming sessions and providing mentorship to team members.
  • Driving and fostering advanced design or architectural tasks.
  • Developing technical roadmaps.
  • Participating in daily stand-ups and weekly retrospectives.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional team members, including our Insurance Product and Actuarial teams.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and support.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience coding with Ruby.
  • Proven experience with architectural planning and design.
  • Ability to articulate the value of technical investments.
  • Ability to operate with little-to-no technical guidance.
  • Experience mentoring engineers.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, self-motivated startup environment focused on industry change.
  • A fast learner, eager to apply existing knowledge and continue developing.
  • Location Preference: Based in Central or Eastern US time zones (CDT & EDT).
