Vultr is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Core Cloud Engineering to join their Engineering team. This role requires a deep understanding of low-level systems programming, networking protocols, and hypervisor technologies. The ideal candidate will be proficient in compiled languages like Rust, C, and Go, with occasional work in PHP. This hands-on position focuses on performance optimization, automation, and systems-level problem-solving for one of the most popular cloud platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain low-level integrations with hypervisor technologies (libvirt, QEMU, KVM).
  • Develop and maintain automation for Open vSwitch (OVS), BGP routing, and other networking components.
  • Analyze and optimize hypervisor performance across I/O, networking, and storage subsystems.
  • Write efficient and maintainable code in Rust, C, and Go for high-performance services.
  • Build and enhance tooling for automated hypervisor provisioning, monitoring, and management.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to align development efforts with reliability, scalability, and business objectives.
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation for APIs, systems, and processes.
  • Share knowledge with team members and mentor them in low-level systems and performance engineering.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in compiled languages like Rust (preferred), C, and Go.
  • Experience in PHP for integration tasks.
  • Strong experience with hypervisor technologies (libvirt, QEMU, KVM).
  • In-depth knowledge of networking protocols and tools, particularly BGP and Open vSwitch (OVS).
  • Experience with related automation frameworks.
  • Advanced skills in performance profiling, tuning, and optimization across I/O, network, and storage layers.
  • Familiarity with database systems and concepts, with a preference for MySQL.
  • Expertise in Linux systems administration and low-level troubleshooting.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with tools like Gitlab.
  • Strong knowledge of configuration management tools like Puppet.
  • Proficiency with observability tools such as Grafana, Sentry, and SumoLogic.
