Scala Engineer

Position Overview

commercetools is seeking a passionate Scala Engineer to join our Search team. You will collaborate with experienced Software Engineers in an agile, international environment, utilizing a modern tech stack including functional programming, GraphQL, and Scala. The Search team is dedicated to building customer-facing search APIs that enhance product discovery on one of the world's most modern e-commerce platforms. As a Scala Engineer, you will tackle complex problems, contribute to a scalable and multi-tenant architecture, and work closely with Product, Management, and DevOps.

Note: For commercetoolers located within 60km of our London office, a hybrid work environment is expected, requiring three days a week in the office.

Your Mission

• Design and implement search functionalities within a PaaS eCommerce Scala backend.
• Develop a scalable and multi-tenant architecture.
• Analyze user needs and discuss technical approaches.
• Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Management, and DevOps teams.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for production systems with a worldwide distributed team.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Software Engineer working with Scala.
• Deep understanding of functional programming principles and practical experience with Scala.
• Experience developing server-side systems using the JVM.
• Exposure to Elasticsearch (preferred), Solr, OpenSearch, or Lucene.
• Experience with parallel and asynchronous programming, and non-blocking I/O.
• Background in developing REST APIs.
• Knowledge of scalable architectures, including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
• A strong desire for continuous self-improvement and learning new technologies and concepts.
• Openness to infrastructure work and familiarity with technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust.
• Fluent English communication skills for effective collaboration in international teams.
