Requirements

  • College graduate with 8+ years of reporting and writing experience, preferably with an emphasis on political and economic content
  • Familiar with the ideas, philosophy, and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands
  • Professional background in editorial writing and commentary
  • Strong experience with newsletter formats
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Demonstrated record of success in growing and engaging audiences via email
  • High level of proficiency in writing
  • Command of editing and digital headline writing, especially for inboxes
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure
  • Flexible to work weekends/evening hours as news developments may warrant
  • High-energy, collaborative team player and strong communicator

Responsibilities

  • Write and curate a twice-a-week states-focused newsletter and column with a heavy emphasis on regional political and economic issues that reflect the Journal editorial page’s free market philosophy
  • Manage a small team of opinion writers in researching and selecting region-specific topics that are of interest to the Journal’s Opinion audience; develop arguments and write persuasive opinion articles for the newsletter/column
  • Work with the Editorial Page Editor, Opinion Managing Editor and other editorial page stakeholders to execute a clear strategy for the newsletter that is informed by audience insights and data
  • Work closely with the Opinion section’s data, SEO, and social media teams to build an audience and find opportunities to bring our journalism to new readers via email and other platforms
  • Work with editorial board members, editorial writers, columnists and features editors to share their reporting in newsletter form, as well as collaborate on editorial spin-offs that would publish in the Review & Outlook section
  • Participate in editorial board meetings
