Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer with expertise in media law, IP (defamation, right to privacy, publicity and image rights, copyright, trademarks, AI)
  • Experience advising global content teams, with focus on UK markets
  • Ability to assess legal risks and develop pre-publication review processes
  • Strong partnership-building skills with legal and editorial stakeholders
  • Capability to deliver training sessions on defamation, privacy, copyright, and trademarks
  • Experience managing defence, resolution of media law, IP disputes, litigation, legal threats, subpoenas
  • Oversight experience for trademark portfolio, brand protection, enforcement globally (UK focus)
  • Experience in copyright enforcement, including drafting cease and desist letters
  • People management experience (managing 2 direct reports, mentoring)
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Cross-functional collaboration across departments (Editorial, Business Affairs, Events, etc.)
  • Proficiency in managing cross-border projects with diverse stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Advise global content teams on content matters, focusing on UK (defamation, privacy, publicity/image rights, copyright, trademarks, AI)
  • Assess and advise on legal risks relating to content
  • Develop pre-publication review processes, engage editorial stakeholders, content operations, outside counsel
  • Build partnerships with legal colleagues across team and Advance group
  • Create materials and deliver training for editorial teams on defamation, privacy, copyright, trademarks
  • Manage defence and resolution of media law and IP disputes/litigation
  • Respond to legal threats relating to content
  • Respond to third-party requests for information and subpoenas
  • Support broader disputes and litigation matters
  • Oversee management of trademark portfolio and brand protection strategy (by junior lawyer/outside counsel)
  • Support global trademark enforcement
  • Support global copyright enforcement (UK focus), including drafting cease and desist correspondence
  • Collaborate with Advance Publications on global strategy aligned with CN objectives
  • Manage two direct reports (legal counsel), provide mentoring and legal education
  • Work independently with minimum supervision
  • Collaborate with broad range of departments on content, branding, business matters
  • Manage cross-border projects involving stakeholders, third parties, legal experts from different markets
