Alma is seeking a mission-driven Senior Backend Engineer to join the Claims Reconciliation team. This role involves building features that solve real problems for mental health providers by managing the process after claim submission and response from insurance. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative environment, embracing communication, experimentation, and iteration in software development. On this scaling team, you will significantly influence Alma's features, services, and architecture, working closely with other teams to create exceptional digital experiences.

Requirements

  • 4-7 years of experience as an engineer with a proven history of working across the stack and building products at scale.
  • Extensive experience with web technologies, including one or more common web frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility and security compliance.
  • Experience implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests.
  • Understanding of observability and monitoring best practices.
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git.
  • Experience in customer-centered software development and close collaboration with engineers, designers, and product managers.
  • Desire to experiment, learn from outcomes (success or failure), and make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience working with and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Experience leading medium to large-sized projects, including problem architecture/solutioning, task breakdown, and progress tracking.
  • Ability to accurately communicate expectations with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Backend Development (50%): Design, develop, and implement maintainable and scalable product features using modern web technologies (Python, Django, MySQL) to support complex initiatives.
  • Project Ownership & Planning (30%): Own and plan complex projects in collaboration with stakeholders, operation leads, product managers, and designers, guiding execution and delivery.
  • Quality Assurance (15%): Own team quality practices and drive improvements.
  • Mentorship (5%): Mentor other team members on big-picture thinking, long-term support plans, and building scalable, maintainable code.
