Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (Staff RN) qualification
  • Knowledge of hemodialysis therapy standards, facility policies, procedures, and regulations (corporate, state, federal)
  • Adherence to FMCNA Compliance Program, patient care, and administrative policies
  • Ability to assess daily patient care needs and develop appropriate assignments
  • Skills in monitoring staff for techniques and policy adherence
  • Participation in staff training, orientation, and required meetings
  • Expertise in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), renal disease, vascular access, dialysis therapy, diet/fluid compliance, medications, adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), laboratory values, transplant/modality awareness, and catheter reduction
  • Ability to implement treatment prescriptions (e.g., Sodium modeling, Ultrafiltration modeling)
  • Proficiency in patient assessment, evaluation, documentation, monitoring, and intervention per FMC procedures
  • Skills in hemodialysis access care, interdialytic transfusions, lab order transcription, and documentation review

Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient Care Technicians in safe, effective chronic hemodialysis therapy delivery per standards and regulations
  • Delegate tasks to direct patient care staff (LVN/LPNs, PCTs, Dialysis Assistants)
  • Assess daily patient care needs and develop assignments
  • Routinely monitor patient care staff for appropriate techniques and policy adherence
  • Participate in staff training, orientation of new staff, and required meetings
  • Ensure educational needs of patients and families are met regarding ESRD
  • Provide ongoing education to patients on renal disease, vascular access, dialysis therapy, diet/fluid/medication compliance, adequacy measures, lab values, and related topics
  • Promote transplant awareness, modality awareness, and catheter reduction
  • Provide safe, effective ESRD care, implement treatment prescriptions, assess patient response, adjust plans, and communicate issues to Team Leader/physician
  • Identify and communicate patient-related issues to Team Leader/physician
  • Initiate Initial and Annual Nursing Assessments, ongoing evaluations, and documentation
  • Participate in pre-evaluation, initiation, monitoring, termination, access homeostasis, and post-evaluation of hemodialysis treatments
  • Intervene for changes in patient adequacy status and troubleshoot access flow issues
  • Provide, supervise, and monitor hemodialysis access care
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document interdialytic transfusions, notifying of adverse reactions
  • Ensure accurate documentation by PCTs, review/transcribe physician lab orders into Medical Information System
  • Prepare lab requisitions for Spectra or alternate labs
  • Support FMCNA mission, vision, values, customer service, QEP, CQI activities, and process improvements for patient satisfaction and quality goals
