Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to perform vital signs, weights, machine setup/operation/programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms like NVL 160), intradialytic monitoring/interventions, treatment initiation/discontinuation/hemostasis/dressings
  • Skills in documentation (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes), machine safety checks, lab specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Observation and reporting of patient conditions/changes to RN/supervisor
  • Assistance in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation/cannulation/heparin administration
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient pre-discharge, record pre/post evaluations/weights/vitals
  • Calculate/enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions accurately/timely
  • Report significant patient changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access (pressures), intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI/process improvements
