Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills for Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and treatment parameters
Observation and intervention skills for patient response, intradialytic problems, and machine safety checks
Ability to collect laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access patency
Perform pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goals)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
Monitor patient response, obtain vital signs before reinfusion, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation with initial identification
Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
Maintain safe and clean working environment
