Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Proficiency in monitoring patients during treatment, evaluating intradialytic problems, and providing interventions as prescribed
  • Competence in discontinuing dialysis treatment, achieving hemostasis, applying dressings, and evaluating patients prior to discharge
  • Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Skills in preparing laboratory specimens, cleaning blood spills, and efficiently utilizing supplies/equipment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Monitor patients’ response to dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or information to RN or supervisor
  • Perform and document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately per facility policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
