Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Ability to assist in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access patency
Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document
Perform machine safety checks and report changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming, ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets/progress notes
Obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
