Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Ability to assist in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access patency
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document
  • Perform machine safety checks and report changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming, ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets/progress notes
  • Obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
