Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access)
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in ensuring safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160) and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, vital signs, treatment parameters)
  • Ability to report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and staff recruitment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment per procedures, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, perform/record machine safety checks
  • Document all treatment-related information accurately and timely (vital signs, parameters, evaluations, interventions)
  • Report patient condition changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene as needed, obtain lab specimens, clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment efficiently, monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI activities for patient satisfaction and quality goals
  • Participate in staff recruitment process
